The Challenge

Birmingham City Football Club owners Knighthead Capital have ambitious plans to develop a Sports Quarter, including a new 60,000 capacity stadium, which will transform the city. The scale of the plans and the performance of the club meant it was critical to build support at launch among policymakers, the local community and the wider public.

The Solution

Following the acquisition of the necessary land from Birmingham City Council, a fully integrated strategy was needed. This involved a live media announcement at the Sports Accord conference as well as a press conference at the football club including broadcasters from BBC News, Sky Sports News and ITV. Tailored written and in-person briefings were also provided to key local and political stakeholders.

The Results

  • 169 Pieces of press coverage following the launch
  • 35+ Political and local stakeholders engaged on the announcement of the Sports Quarter, with highly supportive sentiment recorded in response including from council members
  • Live broadcast interviews at the football club on launch day with Sky News, BBC News and ITV
