The Challenge

How do you persuade Government to prioritise the psychological impact of cancer?

Grayling was asked to support Maggie’s’ – one of the UK’s leading cancer support charities – as they seek government funding to help build 10 cancer centres in areas of deprivation across the country. Maggie’s wanted to build a broad advocacy base across Parliament and in government, to ensure that the needs of the many thousands of people with cancer across the country continued to be considered and met at a time of increasing pressures to the health and social care services.

The Solution

We developed a coalition of support amongst key political stakeholders.

We worked with Maggie’s pro bono to secure meetings with several ministers including the Minister of State for Care and Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In 2021, we held a parliamentary reception attended by over 45 MPs and Peers, including several former Health ministers and the Chair of the APPG on Cancer. Those in attendance pledged their support for Maggie’s, and many echoed this on social media.

Maggie’s now enjoys an excellent working relationship with some of the Prime Minister’s closest advisers. Maggie’s are also now connected to the Minister for Levelling-Up, who supports the campaign and is looking into new funding streams through the Levelling-Up Fund. In 2021 Maggie’s secured planning permission for their new centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London, providing thousands more patients world-leading cancer support.
